Our Story
Born from a Love of Wood and Quality Craftsmanship
North Avenue Refinishing started back in 2012 in a small garage on the outskirts of Clinton, Montana. Mason Reed—our founder—had spent a decade working in commercial carpentry, building everything from office complexes to restaurant interiors. But something was missing. He found himself increasingly drawn to the older, character-rich pieces that people would often discard or relegate to dusty attics.
The spark came when Mason's grandmother asked him to restore her wedding dining table—a 1920s oak piece that had seen better decades. The finish was worn, three legs were wobbly, and honestly, most people would have called it trash. But Mason saw potential. After three weeks of careful stripping, repair, and refinishing, the table became the centerpiece of his grandmother's dining room again, and she cried when she saw it.
That project changed everything. Word spread through family, then friends, then neighbors. Before long, Mason was turning away work at his day job to take on refinishing projects at night. Eventually, the decision was clear: North Avenue Refinishing was born.
Why We Do What We Do
We believe that well-made furniture deserves a second (or third, or fourth) chance at life.
Honoring the Past
Older furniture was built to last. The joinery is tighter, the wood is often higher quality, and the craftsmanship shows in every detail. Our restoration work honors that original intent—we believe in fixing rather than replacing, preserving rather than discarding.
Quality Without Compromise
We use premium materials because cheap finishes cheapen the result. Our stains, sealers, and topcoats are chosen specifically for durability, clarity, and that authentic wood appearance that mass-produced furniture just can't match.
Personal Service, Professional Results
When you work with us, you're not just handing off a project to a faceless shop. We consult with you directly, show you samples, explain our process, and keep you updated throughout. Your furniture gets individual attention because we treat every piece like it's going into our own homes.
Sustainable Choices
Restoration is inherently sustainable. By bringing existing furniture back to life, we reduce demand for new manufacturing, keep functional items out of landfills, and preserve the embodied energy in quality materials. It's a small choice that adds up over thousands of restored pieces.
